HETAS is the governmental body that approves Solid Fuel appliances for domestic heating purposes, fuel sources and related services. HETAS approves products including cookers, boilers, open fires, stoves and heaters for use by the public.

As well as approving these devices HETAS also covers carbon monoxide detectors and alarms appropriate for use in homes.

The following information explains why HETAS was formed and how it aims to help the public with heating issues.

Fireplace and Heating Industry Standards

HETAS works with the heating industry and the government concerning matters relating to building regulations and setting standards for legislation on other relevant heating issues. HETAS has members throughout the UK and Europe who work towards improving and implementing new standards in the heating industry.

HETAS mark of approval can be identified by its three tick logo which is used to certify solid fuel products and services for use in homes.

HETAS three tick approved LogoHETAS also works with the national association of chimney sweeps and helps to implement schemes for training courses. Upon completion successful candidates become HETAS approved which is heating industry recognised.

HETAS also operates a similar scheme in association with the solid fuel association. Heating engineers who specialise in the installing and maintenance of heating systems can also apply to receive HETAS certification.

What the HETAS Does?

HETAS is currently working towards the following objectives. The objectives have recently been renewed to adapt to the changes of the solid fuel industry.

  • To draw attention to and monitor proper use of fuels and appliances as well as safe installation, maintenance and post installation work for fireplaces and other installations.
  • To encourage constant improvement of fireplace product ranges and to continually draw attention to promoting high standards of design, safety features and general high standards in the heating industry.
  • To help provide the solid fuel industry with guidance on issues such as training and industry standards in regard to installing and maintaining solid fuel systems, appliances and fireplace accessories.
  • To work with the Solid Fuel Association to help promote the safe and efficient use of solid fuels and equipment such as mineral based fuels and wood biomass. HETAS achieve this by engaging in publicity campaigns drawing attention to the needs of the heating industry and by giving advice and guidance to members of the industry.
  • To implement research and findings to help influence new legislation and policies that effect the heating industry.
